Astoria Bathhouse Addition

FALL 2021

This project is a proposal for an addition to the Astoria Bath House in Astoria Queens, NY.

Situated on the hill just outside the Astoria Public Pool, I carved into the ground to create accessible landings on which to situate my bathhouse addition. Using a folded plate precedent I created a hinging geometry for most of my buildings, continuing to use it in my furniture as well. Upon entering the site you are led to the changing rooms. Once through them you can descend the ramp to the indoor pools. The mullions of this building depict the different angles at which my folded plate exists throughout the project. All of my pools are shaped as a mirror to the roofs above them. Additionally, the deeper you go into the indoor pool the warmer the pool and the thicker the walls. The same is true for the next stop, the sauna. Walking through the thin path down the middle of the sauna you have four options for heat intensity, the hottest being in the back. Across from each sauna is also a cold pool to cool you down. The sauna is also built to share a wall with the machinery in the cold storage facility right next to it. This way heat is conserved. The roofs are also all oriented to best absorb sunlight. Lastly, apart from storage you can enter the outdoor pool which is shaded under a thin roof. This pool addition was built from brick and aligned near the existing pool house to provide visual continuity when seen from the Astoria pool.
