THEORETICAL

THE OVERFLOW

SPRING 2021

This project relies on self supporting water vessels as the main structural element. The plant vessels sit in the site nested within the “neck” of the water vessels and are cantilevered. This nesting is done specifically so each water vessel’s stream of pouring water is channeled to the indents within the plant vessels. Since the top perimeter of the plant vessels and the central extrusion are on the same level, when enough water enters each plant vessel it will spill out the sides of the vessel and water the plants simultaneously. In the event that there is a lot of water, once the soil is fully saturated the rate of overflow coming off of the plant vessel increases. This spilling water all goes to the base of the site which has a shallow, reactive, peaceful pool of water as the  floor. The interaction of the water with the occupant as well as the rain disrupts this peace, causing the water to change, diffracting outward with each step or each droplet. This disruption is like a “map” of activity.
